A typical working day
There’s no such thing as a typical day within the external communication field – you can never predict what’s going to come up. We receive many media requests from journalists. This could be from consumer journalists, for example, wanting to feature our products in magazines and requesting images. We need to respond to any to any issues or incidents that arise.
Skills and qualifications
In order to work within the communication environment you obviously need to be a good communicator. This can be at all levels, whether that’s verbal communication – speaking on the telephone to journalists – or written communication – writing press releases and getting messages out there.
What do you like about your job?
It’s a very interesting field. You’re not just working with the same team, you’re working across many different teams. You’re talking to journalists on a daily basis. It’s a very interesting, vibrant job. I enjoy talking to people.
What training have you had?
My manager knew I’d done a degree and I wanted to progress within my career, and they’ve been very supportive of that. I’ve done many training courses – for example personal development courses, such as time management, influencing people and communication skills. I’ve also completed courses to help me to develop within my role, such as press release writing, interview training, media training and understanding what the journalist wants.
What is your career training?
I was recently promoted to my new role, so at the moment I’m really absorbing, learning and gaining as much experience as I can before I consider going on, hopefully up the career ladder. I’d also like to consider, perhaps in a year or so, working in another business unit. It’s a large company that I work within, so it would be good to gain some insights into different cultures and different markets.
Why this company?
Why Cadbury indeed! It’s a fun, exciting, vibrant community that I work within. It’s the UK number one confectioner brand. Why not?
