Cadbury and some of its partner organisations are helping cocoa farmers to grow more cocoa and earn more money:
First, by giving the farmers the support they need, to produce more – and therefore earn more. For example, by providing training in farming methods, and access to fertilisers.
Here are just two of the farmers who have been helped, in a cocoa farming village called Bomba in the Western Region of Ghana:
Esther Oppong
Esther Oppong has lived in Bomba since 1972. She is “Queen Mother” of Bomba, and owns 10 hectares, but she was only getting two bags of cocoa beans per year. After going to Farmer Field School through the Sustainable Tree Crops Programme and learning more about different farming techniques, she is producing much more cocoa. After going to Farmer Field School and reading the farming newspapers she has learnt more about how to grown cocoa.
Joseph Abekah Ankrah
Joseph Abekah Ankrah is the chief farmer in Bomba. Since he has had access to fertiliser, he has increased the yield of his eight acres of land. Farmers are becoming more aware of the benefits of fertiliser, but it is hard for many of them to buy it unless they can get a loan.
