standard of living
Like every country, Ghana has some very wealthy people. But many of its people do not have enough to live on.
- It’s better off than many countries in Africa, but it’s about the 48th poorest in the world, in terms of average wealth per person.
- Around 45% of Ghanaians, or over 10 million people, have less than 60 pence a day to live on for food, clothing, and other necessities.
- Half the people have no electricity.
- A quarter have no access to clean safe water. They get their water from rivers and ponds.
- Only about 20% have adequate toilets at home.
- Because of these factors, life expectancy in Ghana is only 59 years, compared to 79 years in the UK.
- Like many Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs) they rely on primary products such as gold, cocoa and timber, which they sell to More Economically Developed Countries (MEDCs) such as the UK.
